Bulletin Board Upgrade

Most schools have bulletin boards. It is usually up to the principal to determine who decorates what bulletin board when. The concern comes when the boards look bad. Sure, anyone can put some kids’ work on a board and call it decorated. Nobody stops to look at it and it does not add to the environment of the school. Here are some ideas to take your boring bulletin boards to the next level:

Theme:  Pick a theme for the boards throughout the building for the year or each month. This will allow for a common message to be thread throughout the building.

Color theme:  Each month have a color that will be common for all boards.

Where is Waldo:  Require that a small school mascot be placed on one or two boards. Encourage the students to find it.

Beyond the frame:  Don't just decorate within the frame of the board. Extend the decoration beyond the frame to bring interest to the board.

Directional signs:  Place directional signs throughout the building pointing to the board.

Coalition:  Have questions posted on one board and answers on another board in the building.

Coming soon:  Decorate the board, then cover it with large paper with a “Coming Soon” sign to build anticipation.

Social media:  Take photos of the boards in the building and post one a week on the school Facebook or other social media page.

Social media:  Post questions on your website or social media sites and provide the answer on a board in the building. This pulls people into the building to get the answer.

Quotes:  Provide a bank of positive quotes as a springboard to the decoration of the board.

Name:  Name each board a word of character. Whoever is assigned that board must uphold that name with the decoration.

Art teacher:  Have your art teacher review the elements of good composition at the start of the school year to set the expectation for bulletin board design.
